PK Accounting Advisory Limited helps PAYE employees go through the tax return process in an organised way – from collecting the basic information and reviewing the submission to handling the next steps of the process.

PAYE in Ireland – tax return and possible tax refund

What is PAYE in Ireland?

PAYE tax return Ireland, or Pay As You Earn, is the system used to collect Income Tax from employees’ earnings in Ireland. Tax and other liabilities are dealt with on an ongoing basis through the employer, based on information provided by Revenue.

During the tax year, the amount of tax deducted depends, among other things, on income, applicable tax credits and available reliefs and other factors affecting the tax calculation. Revenue states that tax credits reduce the amount of tax payable, and their use is taken into account when calculating tax on employment income.

Being employed under PAYE does not, however, automatically mean that you are entitled to a tax refund. After the end of the tax year, you can review your tax position and submit a PAYE Income Tax Return if, among other things, you want to claim additional tax reliefs or credits or seek a refund of overpaid Income Tax or USC.

Who is a PAYE tax return Ireland for?

A PAYE Income Tax Return is primarily intended for people whose main or only source of income is employment or a pension taxed through PAYE. It can also apply to certain other situations specified by Revenue.

A tax return may be relevant if you want to:

  • check your tax position for a completed tax year,

  • claim additional tax credits or tax reliefs,

  • include certain qualifying expenses,

  • declare additional income,

  • obtain a Statement of Liability,

  • check whether you have overpaid or underpaid Income Tax or USC.

Revenue also highlights that the outcome of a tax return may result in a refund, an additional amount being due, or no refund or additional payment. Submitting a tax return therefore does not mean that every person will be entitled to a refund.

Could you be entitled to a tax refund?

Possibly, but this depends on your individual tax situation.

After the end of the tax year, Revenue calculates your tax position based on the information held in its system together with the information and reliefs included in your Income Tax Return. The Statement of Liability then shows whether there has been an overpayment of Income Tax or USC, an underpayment, or whether the tax position has been balanced.

It is therefore important to avoid the simple assumption that “every PAYE employee gets a refund”.

The correct assessment depends on the individual circumstances and information relating to the relevant tax year.

What information do we need?

If you would like to contact PK Accounting Advisory Limited about your PAYE tax return, the first step is to provide basic information that allows us to identify the matter and assess the scope of the service required.

Our PAYE form asks for information including:

  • full name,

  • date of birth,

  • PPS number,

  • residential address and Eircode,

  • telephone number,

  • email address,

  • country of residence,

  • country of tax residence,

  • marital status,

  • confirmation of the required declarations,

  • identity document,

  • signature.

Providing this information allows us to begin handling the matter in an organised way and reduces the need to request the same basic information repeatedly.

Depending on your individual circumstances, additional information or documents may also be required. If this becomes necessary, we will let you know at the next stage.

What happens after you submit the form?

Submitting the form is the first step in the enquiry and does not automatically mean that further action will be taken on the matter.

Once we receive the submission, the information provided is reviewed for completeness and to understand the scope of the matter. Based on this review, we determine what actions may be required and whether additional information needs to be obtained from the client.

Depending on the outcome of the review, we may:

  • proceed with further handling of the matter,

  • request additional information or documents,

  • require further clarification of specific issues,

  • advise that the matter requires additional analysis before further action can be taken.

This allows each case to be considered individually rather than relying solely on the information provided in the form.

Why do we review submissions?

We want to make sure that the information received is sufficient to properly determine the next steps. This is particularly important in tax matters, where the outcome depends on the individual circumstances of the client and information relating to the specific tax year.

Submitting the form does not guarantee a tax refund and does not mean that a refund will be due. The final outcome depends on the individual tax position and the tax return being prepared in accordance with the applicable rules.
